In June 2024, at Backbone State Park, Murphy found the mud before I finished setting the parking brake. He is a 7-year-old Lab mix, 46 pounds, and he does not walk around a puddle. He walks through it. By the time I got the back door open, he had already put two muddy paws on the old bedsheet I used to keep the seat clean. The bedsheet bunched, the mud went into the crease, and I spent the next hour with a shop vac in the campground while the other two dogs watched. A week later I bought the Active Pets Dog Car Hammock.
That was the end of the bedsheet. I had been using it for short trips, back before 2024, when the dogs rode loose and the drives were mostly to Decorah and back. It never really protected anything. Biscuit, my 9-year-old beagle mix, would dig at it until it was a pile in the middle. Dot, the 5-year-old border collie mix, would pace across it. Murphy would leave a layer of hair that I could not vacuum out of the seat fabric. The back seat of our 2019 Toyota Highlander smelled like wet dog and looked like a shedding blanket.
The harnesses came first, in May 2024. Three Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Harnesses, one per dog, all size Medium, because Murphy had climbed into the front seat on the highway and I decided that was enough of that. The harnesses kept them in place. They did not keep the seat clean. A month later, in June 2024, I bought the Active Pets hammock. One, Standard size. I read the listing the way I used to read a wholesaler's terms: 600D Oxford fabric, waterproof, machine washable, universal fit. I checked the return policy before I checked anything else. That is 29 years of running a hardware store talking.
The first install took about 10 minutes. The straps go over the headrests and the cover hangs in hammock mode across the second row. I put it up in the driveway, took it down, put it back up. By the third time I could do it in a couple of minutes. It has stayed in the car all year since. The dogs stay buckled with the hammock in place. I am not going to describe how the tether passes through the cover because I would probably get it wrong and it does not matter. It works, and the dogs are not loose.
The first real test was Door County in September 2024. Sand, lake water, and Murphy's usual talent for finding the one muddy spot in a parking lot. I vacuumed the cover after the trip and wiped it down with a damp cloth. It has been through the washing machine about every other month since. I hang it over the porch rail to dry. The 600D Oxford fabric has held up. No tears, no holes where Biscuit digs her front paws in when she thinks I am not looking. The straps over the headrests have not slipped.
Three dogs, one back seat, and a June afternoon of mud. The cover took the hit, not the upholstery.
The back seat stopped being a daily cleanup job
The Active Pets hammock is the piece that kept the mud, sand and hair off the Highlander's seats. It goes up over the headrests and stays in the car. I vacuum it after trips, wipe it down, and run it through the washing machine every other month.
Amazon Check Today's Price on Amazon →It is not a perfect thing. The middle sags a little with three dogs on it. Dot rides in the middle, and she is 38 pounds of border collie mix who does not sit still. Biscuit is behind the driver, Murphy is behind the passenger, and the cover dips where they cross over each other. Nobody can sit in the back seat without taking the hammock down. Gene rides up front, so that has not been a problem for us. It comes down for washing and goes right back up.
The hammock did not fix Dot's anxiety. She still paces in a new motel room. What helped her was the two Chuckit! Travel Pillow Dog Beds we bought in August 2024, one for Murphy and one for Dot and Biscuit to share. In a motel, the beds go down in the same corner before anything else comes in. By the second trip, she lay down the first night. The hammock is for the car, not for her nerves.
What it did fix is the seat. The Highlander is a used 2019, silver, and I would like to keep it nice enough to trade in someday. Before the hammock, I was vacuuming after every walk. Now I vacuum after trips. Murphy still sheds. That has not changed. The difference is the hair ends up in the cover instead of woven into the seat fabric. I shake it out, vacuum it, and every other month it goes in the machine.
The listing says the cover is waterproof. I have tested that with muddy paws, a wet dog, and one tipped water jug at a rest area in South Dakota. The water beaded on the 600D Oxford fabric and wiped off with a towel. I would not leave a full jug open on it for a long drive, but for the everyday mess it does what it says.
What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table
If you have one muddy dog and a back seat you actually like, the Active Pets hammock is the first thing I would buy. Not the harness. The harness keeps the dog in place, but the hammock keeps the seat from becoming a project. Measure your seat, read the sizing guide, and check the return policy before you cut anything. Put it up in the driveway once before you leave for a trip. If you have three dogs and a passenger who rides in back, think about how often you will take it down. Ours stays up because Gene rides up front. If someone needed that seat every day, the sag and the straps would get old. That is the honest trade. For us, the cover has earned its place in the car.
The cover that earned its place in the Highlander
It has been in the car since June 2024, through Door County sand, Backbone mud and the South Dakota trip. The seat underneath still looks like a seat. That is the whole review.
